This book walks the reader through all the steps necessary to grow roses in cold climates, including recommended varieties and procedures for outdoor and container growing. His tips were unique among the publications I've examined, and his advice sounds authoritative. His bias is towards organic gardening and lots of recommendations for soil amendments are shared. Detailed information on winter storage is included. There's even a recipe section! It's a small book, but packed with information. He answered all my questions so I recommend this book for beginners like me.

Goodden's book is truly an outstanding resource for those interested in the recent history and geography of Northern Thailand. The accounts of his travels through Lan-na are both amusing and informative. The level of detail provided is mostly unavailable in other formats. This book is well worth reading. Equally as good, if not better, is Goodden's first book, Three Pagoda's, get it if you can find it.

This book treats in great depth the history of San Antonio, Texas. It approaches the history from the standpoint of "community" formation. From an author who served as James Michener's researcher while writing his "TEXAS" one would expect the research is thorough and objective. One is not disappointed!

This book covers the early [Spanish] period of the city, and provides the opportunity to see the early settlement, to imagine the lives of those who began a new life here on the far northern reaches of New Spain, back in the early eighteenth century.

It is a "must have" book for anyone interested in San Antonio's early days: an outstanding resource for the student of Texas history.

It is true that Vaz's Saudade is unrealistic as the above review by Kirkus reviews states, but i find that this is what makes this novel an exceptional read. in Saudade, the reader may live in a world unlike ours, where anything imaginable is possible and beauty can be found in the simplist of everyday objects and actions. Vaz conveys the novel's underlying themes of portuguese culture, revenge, love, identity, and truth using her unbelievable creativity that implements simple symbols to represent the most profound of human desires and emotions. the characters are delightfully idealistic yet reflective of tragic human flaws. Vaz's poetic style is spellbinding and truely unique. because of the obscurity of her extended metaphors and symbolism, the novel requires deep thought and focus for comprehension. many events, such as the death of Clara's father, will be bypassed if careful analysis is not being constantly utilized by the reader. i find this mysterious style of Vaz's incredibly refreshing in a market full of fiction with absolutely no insight and lacking the rich artistic content that Vaz so effortlessly provides. the plot had me fiercly hating the antagonists, the beauty of her writing style held me in a state of awe throughout the entire novel, and the ending had me pouring forth tears of joy. Vaz honestly and straightfowardly without any kind of restraint tells a complex story of the brave Clara, who seeks revenge from the church for stealing her mother's land after her death. But unfortunately, her plan backfires and Clara finds herself in a state of terrible depression and desperation. She searches for an escape with the help of wise Caliopia and finds it in a beautiful character by the name of Helio whose simplicity knows nothing but the its unconditional love for Clara. Clara then struggles with her restless desire to expand her horizons and amidst her lonely search for her own identity comes across an answer she never would have imagined true. i would recommend this book to anyone, Vaz's collection of short stories, Fado and Other Stories, is equally compelling. Everytime i pick up a book to read, i wonder if Katherine Vaz has published another written work.

This is a glorious collection of Helen Vendler's prose all about Seamus Heaney the poet, and his poems. Full of deep insight, resonant revelations, and cogent details about poetry, Heaney's poetry, and Heaney the man, it is a marvelous read.

For anyone familiar with Heaney and his poems, this book is a welcome eye-opener, and a fabulous treat.

I recommend this book very highly.

Yes it's way out of date. Yes the super rare shells listed in the book are often no longer even mildly rare. Yes it is drawings only. Sigh. But this is the book that got me and all too many others hooked into this area. 30 years later I still love the hobby. Give it to a child and watch him/her grow.

Mr. Sheldon is a master at depicting the beauty of tidepool creatures while also rendering a very accurate image. In the same tradition as Sibley, he has chosen artistic representations over photos. This makes it very easy to identify creatures as he has been able to select out the useful characteristics for identification. Not only are his drawings excellent, but he has also done a great job of representing those animals and algaes that one actually finds on the central coast.

The descriptions he has written are interesting and engaging without talking down to the reader. I often take this book with me when I take my sixth-grade science students out to the tidepools. I am constantly amazed at how much the students love to look up and read about what they find in this book. I recommend this book over any other tidepool guide that I have seen.

Whether you are visiting or are a resident of Northern CA, you will find this book invaluable reference to explore the flora and fauna of this area.
